Jarocho Pescados y Mariscos

Authentic Mexican Seafood

Fresh seafood isn’t what comes to mind when you visit Kansas City, nor is it what comes to mind when you think Mexican food. Chef Carlos Falcon of Jarocho Pescados y Mariscos is out to change our biases. Falcon will make you a Mexican seafood believer after tasting his Grilled Baby Octopus or Shrimp Aquachilles.

Is Jarocho Pescados y Mariscos Still Open

The bad news is that tasting Jarocho Pescados y Mariscos’ delicious culinary creations is a little harder than it once was. Their KCK location is temporarily closed, rumored to be the result of a staff shortage. The Jarocho team is currently working solely from their newer Jarocho South location in KCMO.

Jarocho South is not as divey as its sibling. It features an open kitchen concept, lively decor, and a full bar ready to serve up an array of margaritas.

Jarocho South is open for takeout, curbside pickup, and dine-in. Due to COVID, they are also taking a sabbatical from their famed “Omakase” style diners. (Omakase—leave it to the chef—was a six-course dinner that was served by reservation only.) Will they bring them back? Time will tell.

What to Order

Feeling timid? You can’t go wrong ordering the Fired Grilled Golden Trout. The dish features golden trout stuffed with shrimp, octopus, and blue crab meat. The oysters are also a popular item and are sourced fresh.

For land lovers, Jarocho Pescados y Mariscos offers a 12 oz ribeye and a 16 oz pork chop. Plus, you will find a few “usuals” like fresh guacamole, churros, and carne asada.

The kid’s menu includes fish tacos, shrimp quesadillas, and for your littlest adventurers: octopus tacos.

For foodies who want to be wowed by an award-winning chef from Veracruz, Jarocho Pescados y Mariscos is a must-visit restaurant.

It’s the winner of Feast magazine’s 2018 and 2019 best seafood and best Mexican restaurant awards. If you feel like celebrating that fact, you can belly up to the bar and enjoy a $38 shot of Jarocho’s best tequila. Of course, they also have affordable drink specials. Look out for “Thirsty Thursday” and the occasional “Margarita Wednesday” featuring $2.99 house margaritas.

Other Restaurants by Falcon

If sushi is your thing, Falcon operates a third restaurant in Kansas City’s Brookside neighborhood called Sayachi Sushi.

Sayachi is a concept of Chef Falcon through a partnership with Chef Yama. Yama, who has fifteen years of Edomae sushi experience at Ginza Kyubey in Tokyo, brings a combination of finely-honed skill and expertise to Sayachi.
